Sumereen project shines in the south of Iraq and restore the glories of the ancient Sumerians

UPP - Iraq

They embraced the ziggurat and wrapped their bodies around it, promoted civilization and  carried a dust that is  full of the soul, beats again, lives with us, talks to us and hears what we say. The sumereen project staff  promoteed the last remaining of the beginning of the universe and the first letter set out to live and multiply in different colors.
From the south of Iraq, which is full of kindness, generosity, and the fragility of emotions, love triumphed to fight war with many ideas, whether through heritage, inheritance or other subtle spiritual details related to the human being and his upbringing in his generous environment.  Sumereen project has started to show the world the richness of Dhi- Qar civilization as it is higher than the ziggurat of the Prophet Abraham, and higher than the seventh heaven.
UPP organization worked in all areas that lead life to peace and tranquility. The organization promoted peace and tranquility through all its projects, which included “culture, heritage, environment, diversity, art, psychological and social support, etc....” The organization insisted that sumereen project is the first of its kind in Iraq, especially diring the difficult economic, political and social conditions that Iraq was going through. For this reason, the Sumereen project was launched to promote the eco-tourism in  Dhi Qar. The project was designed to provide alternative sources of wealth and employment for young people in the province, which depend on the rich, natural and cultural heritage.
Ton Benigns,  the Manager  of Sumereen Project says:
"The marshes, and  Ur, are the most important UNESCO World Heritage sites that can act as a catalyst for the social and economic development of Dhi Qar province,"  .
Benigns adds, "Young men and women in Dhi Qar are the main representatives that are capable of creating a new path for the region's growth, as Sumereen project has proven, by creating job opportunities through a combination of sustainable tourism and preservation of cultural and natural heritage. The program focused on three outcomes:
1. Building infrastructure at heritage sites, in order to provide safe and sustainable access, and increasing the number of visitors and investor in Dhi Qar.
a. Building a place for visitors to the archaeological site of Ur consisting of educational boards, bathrooms, a corridor and other things.
B - Constructing of three building and workshops in Dhi Qar to promote traditional crafts in the region
C- Constructing  a sport club building for traditional boats
This construction has created more than 50 jobs for local residents.
.2 Providing vocational training with the aim of improving job skills and access to job opportunities in the fields of ecotourism in Dhi Qar.
a. Vocational training for young people in 4 traditional crafts in Dhi Qar: traditional boat production, "Madhif" production, food production (date sweets), and handicrafts (wicker, pottery and souvenirs). More than 240 young people were trained in traditional crafts and received manuals.

 3. Creating job opportunities for youth in the sectors of eco-tourism and heritage preservation in Dhi Qar.
c. Providing a job for 180 trainees in an internship program for ecotourism companies in Dhi Qar
B. Giving grants to 20 people to create a startup in the field of ecotourism, supported by courses in marketing and entrepreneurship, and business training sessions
In addition, the Sumereen Project has also campaigned in Dhi Qar to promote the protection of the marshes through law enforcement, against pollution and poaching, with the participation of communities and local authorities. We also conducted an online campaign to promote Dhi Qar as a tourist destination, and concluded this campaign with a festival in Nasiriyah. The Sumereen project implemented a comprehensive approach involving local authorities, civil society, the private sector, youth and women.

For his part, the project coordinator, Dr. Faked, confirms that the Sumereen project is considered one of the pioneering projects, rather the first project that was implemented in the south of Iraq. The importance of the Sumereen project lies in that it brought back to mind and turned the compass again to the land of civilizations and culture. Hence, the project was launched to revive the cultural heritage of the Sumer civilization, starting from Implementation of an ambitious and large project in the ancient city of Ur by re-executing wooden corridors with specifications that fit the harsh weather conditions in order to serve visitors, in addition to equipping the ancient city for the first time with a monitoring system with modern cameras and a modern speaker system to follow up and guide visitors. One of the most important elements of the success and leadership of the Sumereen project is its focus on young people of both genders by introducing the cultural heritage of Dhi Qar Governorate, in addition to creating job opportunities for more than 480 young men and women.
The Sumereen project included many activities and events over the course of three years, including training women in the manufacture of sweets, pastries and foodstuffs, as well as training for the manufacture of traditional miniatures, workshops to teach the "Madhif" making from reeds,  and other workshops for vocational training, activities related to the marshes, and many special events.
Marwa Abdel Hussein, from Dhi Qar Governorate, is married and has children. She is one of the beneficiaries of the Sumereen project, where she works from home in the field of sewing.
Marwa submitted through the online form link that we published on our social media pages, and she was contacted and interviewed, and then her project was accepted.
Marwa was able to achieve her dream by continuing to work in her own field, and after receiving the Sumereen grant, she was able to develop her work more and began promoting her project and clients began to communicate with her.
Marwa says, "Today is a very important opportunity to contribute to the realization of our dreams and simple projects in order to promote our ideas and projects and to show the community the idea that women can work in all fields."
Marwa adds, "I can do both my homework and my work in sewing because I love my work, and for this I can complete all the housework and take care of my children, and then start working."
Marwa's message "There should be more attention to women, especially in the southern governorates, because they live in an environment that is full of challenges and obstacles. Therefore, by supporting these small projects, women can offer everything to society."

The director of the Italian “UPP” organization in Iraq is keen on the sustainability of these projects, as they contribute to serving Iraqi communities, promoting Iraq’s civilization and contributing to its revival. He asserts " Our organization was worked in Iraq in the 90s and was the first organization that contributed establishing the Iraqi civil society and putting the special touches on community work, as well as working in the fields of culture, art, heritage, minorities, and psychosocial support, and it continues to this day.”
He continued, "The Sumereen project is considered one of the important projects in southern Iraq, as it restructured the work related to sustainability and economy through heritage, as well as preserving and promoting the cultural heritage in order to keep building cultures, strengthening and exchanging them among the societies of the world, and this is what we did through the Sumereen project during Over the past years. We aspire to work in this field, which contributes to strengthening stability and sustaining peace through the economy, culture and heritage.
Nour Zidan Khalaf from Dhi Qar Governorate, she is 25 years old and I am a graduate of the Faculty of Archeology from Dhi Qar University.
Nour says, "Frankly, there wasn't a job opportunity in my field, making handicrafts and reading."  "I have several participations in various workshops, seminars and online lectures, in addition to several works in the Nasiriyah Civilization Museum, which are archaeological miniature."
Nour adds, "At this time, I have started investing my energy to improve my skills and knowledge regarding heritage.  I was on my way to the museum when I learned that there is an application to "Enki workshop" within the Sumereen project, and I looked at the online link that was posted on the Sumereen project's Facebook page, inviting us to the workshop's training in the manufacture of archaeological miniatures, including pottery.  I applied for that workshop and I was accepted, and started training in this workshop.”
Nour says, "I really hope that we can share what we learned through the trainings and the work we received with our people.  We will contribute to show everyone that Dhi Qar Governorate is a distinguished tourist destination and invite everyone to visit the governorate and see our work on the ground.”
Nour's message: "I wish the unemployed young people and women to join such workshops and training for the purpose of gaining experience, and thus they can open their own projects later. My message to the government and decision-makers is to take care of archaeological sites and preserve our cultural and civilizational heritage from extinction and encouraging investment and providing tourist facilities to attract more tourists from all over the world."
The sumereen project doesn`t make us fly high only, but it gave a wing to each of us to carry the rest of the beauty of this country and make it a flag that flutters above the sky to attract the world’s attention that Iraq is the country of civilizations and not the country of wars, it is the country of beauty and not the country of corruption, it is the country of culture and science and not the country of ignorance, rather it is the country who taught humanity everything.
Jaafar Odeh Shweil, he is born in 2000 and lives in Dhi Qar Governorate - Al-Fuhud District.
Jaafar says, "My interest was previously in the hospitality "Madhif" industry, so I participated in the Turath workshop, which is important to me because it helps me achieving my dream of making "Madhif", and I learned many information that helped me planning my project."
Jaafar adds, "These workshops contribute to enhancing stability among young people, providing them with job opportunities, developing their capabilities, and enhancing their resilience against life difficulties."
Jaafar's message: "young people should be given a special care, to enhance their social stability, and the they should seize all opportunities that come,  in order to benefit and plan their projects for the future."
The Sumereen project is a local project funded by the European Union and implemented by the Italian “UPP” organization in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program through the project “Supporting Iraq’s recovery and stability through local development” in cooperation with Dhi Qar Governorate.
It is worth noting that the UPP is an Italian organization founded in Baghdad in 1991, to support the Iraqi people and stand with them in the face of injustice and wars, useful sports, artistic and community activities.
