Modern Chaldeans are an Aramaic speaking Catholic Syriac community from northern Iraq, not to be confused with the ancient Mesopotamian civilization of the same name. First identified as 'Chaldean' by the Catholic Church in the sixteenth century, this misnomer persisted, developing into a distinctive and unique identity

CHALDEAN. The people in modern day Iran and Iraq were once known as the Assyrians. The church established itself there very early but the people in this area fell into the heresy of Nestorianism in the 5th century. After missionary efforts many returned to union with Rome, and in 1553 Pope Julius III proclaimed the first Patriarch of the Chaldeans. Chaldean is the biblical term used for those from Babylon. Today the Patriarch of this rite located in Bagdad, Iraq where most of the members of this rite live

By the fourth century the heirs of St. Thomas became hierarchically dependent on the Assyrian Church – an Eastern Syriac church also founded by Thomas, but centered in the Persian Empire. The catholicos-patriarch of the Assyrian Church regularly dispatched bishops to the Indian church to ordain priests and deacons and regulate ecclesial life.
In the eighth century, Mar Timotheos I (780? – 823), the Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church, appointed an ethnic Assyrian as the metropolitan archbishop for the Thomas Christians, with the title of Metropolitan and Gate of All India. ً
